Health Insurance with Amy Klobuchar

In this first unit of Rhetoric, we have been learning about what Rhetoric is and how we use every day without acknowledging it. If you don't know what Rhetoric is, it is effective and persuasive writing or speaking and a language that is designed to hook in a set audience. Within this unit, we had learned Rhetorical devices and the three different concepts you need to use to become a successful Rhetoric speaker. The three concepts we learned were Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Ethos is creating trust and credibility, Pathos is demonstrating emotion to lure in the audience, and Logos is providing logic to the reader or listener. While learning all of this, we paid attention to the Democratic debate and wanted to use our Rhetoric skills as if we were the Democratic candidates. For this Action Project, we were assigned a Candidate to study and research. We had to create a question for the candidate and answer it using the three Rhetorical concepts and two Rhetorical devices. I was assigned Amy Klobuchar, and presented a question that involved health insurance/Medicare.

TRANSCRIPT:

[Question] Hello, Senator Amy Klobuchar, as a single mother of three who struggles with getting affordable health insurance for my kids and me, I really like Bernie’s plan with everyone receiving free medicare. So how would you help uninsured families receive healthcare? And how would you help families that have been put on pending for more than 3 months? I have personally struggled with not being able to find affordable healthcare and had to deal with waiting for long periods of time to receive it.

[Response] As I have expressed before, quality, universal, and accessible healthcare should be given to all families across America. I also have experienced my own personal issues with healthcare and medical insurance as well. When my daughter was born she was very sick. When I had her she seemed like a normal, healthy baby. But then when a nurse came in she said “she can’t swallow, she can’t swallow” and due to an insurance company rule, I was forced to leave the hospital 24 hours after she was born, which was the rule back then. Due to that experience, I went to the legislature and worked with people to get one of the first laws in the country passed guaranteeing new moms and their babies a 48-hour hospital stay. This led me to run for office to fight for common-sense health care solutions and to make sure everyone got that kind of healthcare like we got. Now, you mention Bernie and, yes, I do agree with free medicare for all and bringing down the cost of pharmaceutical drugs, but he also wants to eliminate private insurance as we know it. By doing this it will lead to over 148 million Americans not having their current insurance. Now, not all Americans have private insurance, but those people will have to figure out what they would have to do to get healthcare that suits them. According to cdc.gov, 30.1% of Americans are uninsured and my goal is to change that. Our families are our team, so I do believe that medicare should be available for all, and I do believe that families shouldn’t be struggling to be accepted to have affordable health insurance, and I do believe that mothers shouldn’t have to worry about not having Medicare and health insurance for their children.
