I'm Sick And It's Snot Funny

For the second unit of our STEAM course, Cure, we learned about medications and treatments. We took a look at how medication and drugs are different and how they alter the body in different ways. An interesting way we learned this was by completing a lab using miracle berries. To give us a better understanding of how a drug changes our bodies, we consumed a miracle berry. This type of drug basically cancels out our sour receptors and reveals the sweetness of the food item that is originally sour. This helped us have a better understanding of how a medicament works. A medicament works by targeting certain receptors to cancel out pain or nerve activity. For this action project, we had to choose a symptom to learn about and research a medication that is prescribed, an over the counter medication, and another type of treatment that is easily accessible. I chose a common symptom, which is a cough. By demonstrating our research, we had to produce what we learned into a medication box. I decided to create mine as a digital box which is my slideshow.

In class, we also learned about the "lock and key" mechanism. The lock and key mechanism demonstrates how a medicament works based on the molecular structure. If a medicament has a molecular structure, you can see the chemical reaction or the "fit" the medicament has. Which is translated as the "lock." For a better understanding, we can use the miracle berry as an example. The miracle berry is a medicament that cancels out our sour receptors as I previously stated. By doing so, the miracle berry sends the signal to our nerves to chill out and not react as our body would usually due to a sour item in your mouth. A miracle berry represents the lock and key mechanism because we are able to easily see the "fit" or "lock" the medicament has when entering the body.

During this unit of Medication, I found it super interesting to learn about the different ways drugs alter the body. When conducting this action project, it helped me better understand the treatment options that are out there and the effects they have. While conducting this action project, it was inspiring and most interesting looking at the different types of medications that are possible to be used. It was really cool to take a closer look at the different outcomes for different diseases and illnesses. Overall, I really enjoyed this unit, and it helped me explore and open up my research and study a bit more.
