Hey! I Invented a new word it's called Plagiarism!

For the second to last unit of our class, A Nation's Argument, we have been looking into the Bill of Rights and the ratification in it. In the unit, we were able to gain a better understanding of the US Consitution and the fifteenth Amendments. With this investigation, we were able to get way deeper into this topic by watching the documentary, 13. This documentary was focused on the 13th Amendment, which states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." We then continued to look and start thinking about American citizens and the rights that are given coming into America, and how these rights apply to immigrants. We also asked the question about how Amendments also address that topic. For this action project, we were able to go through our student handbook to amend a current school rule. I chose to amend the act of plagiarism.

Unjust Rule (Before): What is the school “rule” you think is contradictory, unfair, or needs amending?
Plagiarism

1. After locating the specific article in your school’s Code of Conduct, copy the full text here:

All incidents involving the misrepresentation of one’s own work proved or suspected, intentional or unintentional, on a major assignment or a minor one, will be reported to the Head of School.

What follows are definitions of various types of academic fraud and a description of the process that typically will be followed when someone is suspected. High School students face a range of consequences from corrective actions and academic penalties to college notification and potential dismissal. Repeat offenses and egregious cases will be treated more severely. With changes in technology, including extensive use of the internet, students can easily cut and paste sentences, passages, or even pages and may be especially tempted to do so when under stress.
There are many gradations of plagiarism, and teachers and students may need to work together to determine whether the unacknowledged borrowing was intentional.
_________________________________________________________________________________

This rule is unjust because there are not specific and detailed consequences when plagiarism is acted and brought up. This rule is unjust because it is an unsettled/indefinite rule that does not justify the situation and occurrence properly.

Evidence: There have been multiple occurrences where there have been issues of plagiarism of other student's work leading into an unsolved/unjustified problem. If the issue is solved there isn't a truly strict and grounded consequence for the student to learn from their mistake or for other students to learn from the incident either.

P1 - There may be no principle more important to an academic community than integrity.

P2 - What follows are definitions of various types of academic fraud and a description of the process that typically will be followed when someone is suspected.

P3 - Plagiarism occurs when a writer takes the words or ideas of another and passes them off as their own.

C - Students who choose to plagiarise will meet with the head of school to determine further steps.

New Rule:

Since GCE prepares students for real-life scenarios and scenarios that may occur outside of school like, college students should be able to understand and follow the same and valid consequences. Students who decide to plagiarise on any large and meaningful assignment should automatically get suspended for a week (depending on the weight/importance of the assignment), and receive a zero for that assignment.

P1 - The current handbook lacks and does not contain a certain and effective structure for the students to understand the weight of their work/assignments. Other schools (including colleges and universities) consistently punish those who commit plagiarism.

P2 - Lack of consistency consequence leads to a lack of effort from the students and the work they provide.

C - Students should face a much more reasonable consequence to prepare them for college life and learn responsibility and autonomy. They Should face in-school suspension which consists of no talking, staff monitor, lunch eaten independently.

Result:

You should serve the same consequences that other students serve when making an academic choice.

Students will learn autonomy and learn how to responsibly do their work. With this students will also be able to understand what it’s like to become a college student for the real world. Putting this Amendment into place it will also encourage students to be critically aware of what they choose to do. In or out of their school work. I think this Amendment will truly show discipline and formation within the school body, and help students excel in their academics.

When going over this new Amendment/rule the closest amendment from The Bill of Rights that can be related to this one is: Amendment six, which states, “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor; and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.” The part of this amendment, where it states, "an impartial jury" means a fair and just trial that's not biased. This Amendment relates to Amendment six because it is stating criminal actions and the consequences that follow with an adjustment to the weight of work that has been plagiarized. Since plagiarism is a crime itself it is served as a great consequence at GCE that is delivered as Amendment six states.

This Amendment displays true citizenship at GCE by prepping GCE students for their future/higher education, and to also teach them the responsibilities as a progressive student. Since GCE is open-minded and connected to the real world it will give the students at GCE a better understanding of true discipline and consequences. With this Amendment, it will help structure the students into becoming young adults with great responsibility. Through this, it will also help the student become autonomous and learn to have self-control when making academic choices.

“I think that this Amendment will allow students to reflect on their GCE experience and their contribution to this school. I also think that students who are plagiarising should rethink their decisions and I believe that this Amendment will allow those certain students to stop plagiarising.” - NB
