I'm Not Ill, My Pancreas Is Just Lazy!

In our winter term for our STEAM class, Disease, we have been learning about the different body systems that a human obtains the help to keep our body in balance. We also went over the causes of different diseases and how our bodies react to those certain diseases. In addition, we learned about the classification of diseases such as the cause, geographics, and geoeconomics. For this Action Project, we had the opportunity to create a patient profile and describe how their disease affects their everyday lifestyle depending on what it is exactly. I chose to take a look at type two diabetes and how it affects someone in different ways. I also interview someone who currently has diabetes, in order to get her experience of type two diabetes. I think type two diabetes is pretty common. It is a common disease because it could come because of aging, excess weight, family history, etc. Every person who does have diabetes goes through a different journey with it.

My patients' name is Dalia. She is a fifty-six-year-old woman who has type two diabetes, which is basically when your blood sugar is too low. This could be caused when your body does not produce/develop insulin (insulin is a hormone that helps your body take in sugar. It keeps your blood sugar level from going too high) correctly. Another cause could also be your diet and eating too much sugar or carbohydrates. Type two diabetes usually affects people who are between forty and sixty years old. This disease can actually be lifelong, but it does have some treatments to try and prevent some symptoms. Dalia was diagnosed with diabetes when she was forty-six. When Dalia was younger, she would work at a post office sorting out the mail, which resulted in her not getting a lot of physical activity at work. As a patient, Dalia was slightly active, but not active enough where it would create the amount of glucose our bodies need.

One of the most common causes of type two diabetes is someone's diet, and health state. Another cause the function of your pancreas (the pancreas is apart of your digestive system; this system breaks down all of your food) is not properly producing the hormone called insulin. This causes your glucose to rise at high levels then it is supposed to. As someone who has type two diabetes, Dalia states, “When I first was diagnosed with type two diabetes, I acknowledged I could not eat everything anymore, like carbs and sweets which was the hardest part because I had to change my whole diet.” When switching your diet, it could become a struggle since your body and mind are so used to having those food components coming in. As a patient with type two diabetes, you basically have to make sure you track everything you eat which could be a life changing thing and struggle you have to deal with everyday. As for Dalia, she states that type two diabetes was “unexpected” but there are other people in her family who have/had type two diabetes as well. So you can be diagnosed with type two diabetes genetically or because of your state of health.

Some common symptoms that Dalia experiences when having type two diabetes are often hunger, headaches, drowsiness/always tired, frequent urination. Since Dalia currently has type two diabetes, it often affects her urinary system, which is a system we have in our body that controls the salt and liquid waste that comes out of us, meaning she frequently urinates and that causes her to spend a lot of time throughout the day in the restroom. This occurs because of the excess glucose that is in anyone is blood who has type two diabetes. The kidney reacts by releasing it out of the blood through urine. This, of course, causes more urine production within the body. Another struggle Dalia experiences are headaches which are affects her nervous system, the nervous system is in charge of transmitting signal throughout the body. When having headaches it is not usually harmful, but for a person with type two diabetes, it signals that your blood sugar is out of target range which is usually why that when anyone with diabetes experiences many headaches. One last symptom Dalia struggles with is fatigue (sleepiness) which is often associated with type two diabetes. When you have type two diabetes, poor blood pressure usually results in high blood sugar which causes the person to become very tired and drowsy some of the time. Dalia states, “I have to use the bathroom much more often, I always feel weak, I often times have constant headaches, and feel very sluggish and tired.”

Classifications:

When having diabetes, it always good to exercise. When you exercise when you have diabetes, your insulin resistance goes down and the cells in your body are to use glucose much more easily and efficiently. It is also good to have a healthy diet and watch out for your count and not eat too many carbohydrates and sugar. When taking medication for type two diabetes it tries to help each component of diabetes so the blood, insulin, glucose, etc.

Type two diabetes it affects many of the organs in your body such as your heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes, and kidneys. With these organs being affected by type two diabetes, if you don’t take proper care of yourself it could be life threatening. It could also cause many symptoms that affect these organs. For example, you may have body aches, headaches, or need to urinate often. Type two diabetes is able to affect these many organs and it all revolves around your blood sugar levels. While type two diabetes does not spread, it is a disease where you have to make sure to you are treating your diabetes.

glucose levels if you do feel the symptoms of type two diabetes or if you seem to be overweight. Diabetes is diagnosed if your blood sugar levels are 6.5% higher than normal. Your healthcare professional would prescribe you medication that will help with your insulin, glucose, etc. They would also suggest you exercise often and to stay away from carbohydrates and sugar. As a patient of type two diabetes, you have the responsibility of tracking her activeness, diet, and medication.
