Stop Monkeying Around!
Welcome to my STEAM class, Population. In this class, we have been talking about the taxonomic levels and how they can be helpful when categorizing any organism. We read the book In The Shadow Of Man by Jane Goodall to see the interactions of chimpanzees and to see their lifestyle and certain techniques that they use for food or when traveling in groups. We were also able to go to the Lincoln Park Zoo and choose out the organism of our choice for this action project. For this action project we had to choose our animal and document their taxonomy and compare and contrast our organisms to two other organisms. I chose to look at the Bolivian Gray Titi Monkey (Callicebus donacophilus) because I personally like monkeys and I really find them interesting, especially with their social interactions. Since we chose our organism we, had to compare ours with two other organisms and use mathematical language to identify it.
About my Organism:
The organism I chose to research the Bolivian Gray Titi Monkey who are usually found in South Africa and Brazil. The climate that they live in is a tropical environment with a large amount of vegetation. The Titi Monkeys feed on fruit and leaves they find by their home along with insects but insects are a small percentage of their diet. Scientist believe that these Monkeys usually travel in a group and contain a social bond with each individual in their group. The average lifespan for a Titi Monkey is about 20-25 years. Although their name is Bolivian Gray Titi Monkey they are not always gray; they actually range from a orange-brown to grey colors. Their tails can also grow up to 19 inches in length.
1) Titi Monkey ∈ Primate
The Titi Monkeys are a part of Primates.
2) Titi Monkey ∉ Plantae
The Titi Monkeys are not a part of the set of Plantae.
3) Titi Monkey ⊆ Monkeys
Titi Monkeys are a subset of Monkeys. They are a part of the set of Monkeys. (A set means a collection of objects that fall under that category.)
4) Titi Monkey ∈ Mammalia
Titi Monkeys are mammals.
5) Titi Monkey ∉ Amphibia
Titi Monkeys are not a part of the set of Amphibian universe. (A set means a collection of objects that fall under that category.)
Reference Picture:
In class, we were grouped to compare our organism to two in order to see the differences and similarities between one another. One of my teammates had an African Painted Dog you can see their blog here and my other teammate’s organism was a Lynx and you can also see their blog here. When thinking about the comparisons and similarities between one another, it was actually a bit harder then I had expected and I actually acknowledged how different each of our animals are. We sorted out the differences and similarities on a Venn diagram.
Conclusion:
Overall, I really enjoyed this action project. It was very interesting to see the difference and comparisons of every organism and the history behind taxonomy and the reason why we use it. Actually being able to go out of the classroom and to extend our research was very engaging and much more interesting to see different organisms interact and to see their lifestyle, just like the book we read over the summer, In The Shadow Of Man. I am excited to start this new class and I am looking forward to see what else we will be doing this year.
