Mapping the Homeless

My AP Project is about Homeless people who are living under viaducts and how they are being treated. Recently, the city has blocked them up and took all their materials such as, tents, blankets, carts, etc. The area I chose to study this topic is the Bucktown area. The reason why, I chose that area and this topic is because I usually pass by this area very often especially going to and from school. I have seen these viaducts gated up and most of the homeless people who have been living left. Another reason why, I chose the topic of homeless people is because I feel like not many people are paying attention to this issue when it is impacting lots of people especially in Chicago.

For my first map, the past map. What I did was map the crime rate. The reason why I mapped the crime rate is because crime rate can come in effect to homeless people. I noticed that in the Bucktown area there is a number of crime rate but, not as much as I expected. Even though that some homeless people are not involved in crime it can come in effect. When I went to map crime rate There was only a certain area of crime rate surprisingly. That area where I mapped it was Milwaukee. Another thing I mapped was the past parks. It was hard trying to find all the information but, I tried finding the cause of why we are currently in this issue.

For my second map, the present map. For the present map I mapped the viaducts. Recently, the city has gated up the viaducts and took out the peoples tents, blankets, shopping carts, food, pillows, backpacks, etc. I believe that this situation is very important because a lot of people are being impacted by it. Homeless people had to move and leave the area they were in. It takes a long time for them to collect materials like clothing, tents, blankets, etc. It's hard especially for those who have kids, animals, or other loved ones. There somehow has to be a solution to this issue. And many homeless people choose to not go to a homeless shelter because of how they might be treated or if they have kids or an animal.

For my third map, the future map. The future map I created included a lot of community centers that might be able to help the homeless people. Such as, giving them materials like, clothing, food, tents, blankets, etc. Another thing is homeless shelters that allow animals. I know not all homeless people have animals but, it could help the people who are struggling with an animal. I also included youth centers. The reason why I did so was so the next generation of people are able to live differently and so we are able to cut the homeless population. They would be able to be productive and live better.
